The Power of YOUR Dance...

Did you know that we have danced since the dawn of time?

Many of the original tribe leaders, chiefs, spiritual leaders and healers were dancers. Dance was used as a path to power, a path to transformation, a path to healing, a path to connection, a rite of passage and a passageway to the divine...

Through Dance We moved our bodies; transformed emotions; generated strength, confidence and power; caressed and healed our bodies; nurtured our minds; released and shifted disease; vented our frustrations; grieved through our movements and sounds; rose up in ecstasy; felt the freedom and liberation of spirit; explored movements; connected with our bodies, our loved ones, pure strangers and the universe; felt our hearts explode wide with joy....

Dance can transcend the spoken word and is something that we can all do, in some way shape or form...

To move our bodies, sway, feel the rhythm, explore, have an experience of something bigger than us and a freedom of movement and energy.

There is no right or wrong way to DANCE this kind of dance...

I've discovered that we ALL also LOVE to Dance...

It's in our veins...

When we hear the rhythm of the drums...

The pulse of the earth...

The flow of the seasons through music...

Our hands or feet start to tap...

Our head starts to move...

Our hearts perhaps beat a little faster...

Our bodies start to yearn to move...

And if we feel comfortable enough, we may allow the whole body to get involved.

If not, maybe it will be contained to just that hand or foot tap.

Or worse even if we've learnt to completely restrain ourselves and block all feeling and expression out of our being, and although this may serve us in some instances over a prolonged period the danger is that everything we hold in has nowhere to go, no way to be released and thus gets lodged and stuck in our bodies.

This can easily be seen if walking along a street somewhere where live music may be playing and if you pay attention you'll notice that the very young children, males and females alike will smile, bounce, jiggle and giggle to the rhythm of the live music. Often they will be the only ones doing it with no one is showing them what to do because most likely no one else is still as pure, carefree and in touch with their body and souls yearning. Or perhaps there may be a parent or family friend smiling onto the young one encouraging them with onlookers smiling along in delight, however still a little too inhibited to break out into free dance themselves...

This movement, this dance is innate. The wisdom is already in us. It is stored in our bodies. It knows what to do. How to move. How to soften. How to strengthen. How to engage. How to heal. How to connect.

If we can feel comfortable enough to dance without the FEAR of feeling that we are not good enough because we Didn't Do It Right then we could be liberated from these are lies that have been feed to us and begin tapping into the amazing POWER that can be experienced and utilised from WITHIN ONES SELF through the real experience of Dance...

If we can come to realise that there is no right or wrong way to dance, that we all can dance, then we can begin to tap into the magnificent and power of dance not only as a form of exercise (as it is one of the most wonderful physical workouts you can do) but also as a celebration of the our bodies, hearts, minds and the awesomeness and power of the human spirit!

Some dance ideas to help you get into and explore YOUR dance...

  • Put on your favourite tunes and dance around your house in your pjs or with the kids or while doing your housework!

  • Light your room with candles, put on some sensual tunes, turn off the lights and dance in front of a mirror watching, admiring and being fasinated with the way your body moves. Pay special attention to the curves and shadows and shapes and enjoy how delicous it all is.

  • Pick a song of the week and play it at work (or with the kiddies or grandkiddies or your partner!) and see who can do the most daggy dancing and cheer everyone else on.

  • My Favourite (as you can see in the vid above): Go out into nature somewhere with your ipod, put your headphones on and dance whatever feels good!

  • Get yourself along to a local drum circle and let the rhythm of the drums guide your body.... Or can't find a drum circle, just get yourself some funky drumming or instrumental music on itunes (My latest fav is 'sika')....

  • Watch some dance or music video hits on TV or youtube and just dance along! I love some of the 80's stuff for this like wham's 'jitterbug'.... Super fun and helps me to get through the dishes when there is a HU-MUNGUS pile of washing to do :)

  • Or maybe just head out to a dance class or dance social event.

Whatever you do. Remember this is your time for you. There is no right or wrong way to dance. Dance it your way. Dance your feelings. Unashamably. All your feelings and emotions. And feel them shift as they are acknowledged and moved through your body. Most of all. Enjoy. YOUR. Dance.

And. Feel it's power.
